How to Find a Modelling Agency

By: Mercedes Aspland

When you are starting out your career as a model it can be a good idea to find yourself an agency. Obviously you may decide to work freelance but it can be hard to get access to work and some clients will only work with agencies. An agency will help you to build up your portfolio, provide you with casting opportunities and arrange bookings and deal with the client in regards payment and other aspects. This will obviously make life easier for you but will also result in you paying a commission and so reducing your earnings.

If you do decide to look for an agency then there are many do's and don'ts when it comes to finding a modelling agency. These should be followed carefully to ensure that you avoid scams and don't lose money.

Don't sign with the first agency you find until you have looked around. There are lots of agencies and there could be a better one out there for you.

Don't go alone to the agency.

Don't hand any money over. An agency should not charge you a joining fee. If they try to DO NOT join the agency.

Don’t pay for an assessment, if an agency want to take money from you before they meet you then they are probably not reputable and are just after making money

Don't use agencies that advertise in the backs of magazines or newspapers

Don't go to the agency in your best 'model' clothes and make up. The agency will be looking for people with natural talent and a good foundation that they can work with, so be as natural as possible.

Don't sign a contract until you understand the terms, and are happy with their terms. You might want to get a solicitor to look over it before you put your signature to it.

Don't join an agency that says you are guaranteed work; the modelling industry is not a normal job and there are no guarantees. It’s also normal to wait several months before your first booking.

Do show confidence but not arrogance.

Do ask how much of a percentage of the client's payment the agency will take.

Do ask for examples of their work and referrals of clients and models so that you can ask about them.

Do ask to see some work samples or tear sheets of the photographers used by the agency.

Do listen to what they have to say and ask questions if you don't understand.

Do research the agency over the internet and find out what other people have to say about them; this will help you to avoid agencies that scam their models.

Do go to the agency for an interview. No good agency will sign you up without meeting you first.

Finally the most important thing to consider is do you like the agency. When you go for your interview they will be assessing you but you should also assess them. This is very similar to when you are looking for a job, if you go somewhere and you find the people unfriendly and the atmosphere uncomfortable then don’t go for it. The most important thing is that you find someone to work with that you like and think will do the best for you. Remember an agency is nothing without their models.
