Social networking has revolutionised the online marketplace. Since 1997, there has been exponential growth in this area, with many social networking websites, blogs and discussion forums having sprung up. It was not until 2005, however, that businesses really began to understand the unique potential these sites offered them. Indeed, not only are they one of the best sources available for gathering data on your target market – their likes and dislikes, for example – but they also provide an excellent way to keep up-to-date with new trends. Additionally, since humans have a tendency to discuss their experiences, both positive and negative, they are great for discovering the opinions people have regarding different products and services. In fact, as research underlines, this is becoming increasingly pertinent, since consumers are coming to rely on the feedback their peers provide when making purchasing decisions. How, then, can you use social networking to boost your business? According to experts, there are two effective ways this can be done. Firstly, you can create an online community around your existing website. This can include encouraging customers to leave feedback in the form of product or service reviews, and creating such applications as blogs or discussion forums. In this way, you are prompting your customers to interact with your business. This can lead to many advantages, including increased respect and loyalty for your brand. It is important however, to ensure that you interact with your customers on a regular basis and efficiently respond to any queries or issues. A blog can be a particularly good idea, since it allows you to communicate any new offerings your business has, or any developments/changes you are considering making. By asking for feedback, not only will your customers feel involved in the business, but you might actually gain valuable insight into how they would like to see things work. You may think that it is your business, and subsequently, your decisions are the only ones that will count. However, without servicing the needs of your customers, you are not going to be successful. Therefore, taking on board their opinion can be extremely beneficial to sales and overall success, and will serve to enhance that all important client-customer relationship. The second option is to join an online marketplace. Complete with the above features, many also employ the use of podcasts and videos, as well as offering directory listings. They are especially advantageous for smaller companies who don’t have the financial capacity or technical expertise to create an online community of their own. Additionally, they are excellent for those looking to expand their customer base. Online marketplaces can also be beneficial for improving the service you offer. For example, take time out to research some of the common complaints customers have. By doing this, you will have the tools to find a solution. And, by offering the customer what they can’t find elsewhere, you will find that online selling becomes a lot more successful!
