Ignite your festive spirit with a trip to Jersey

By: icampbell

During the winter period, the island of Jersey is transformed into a festive haven, offering visitors the perfect chance to explore its stunning terrain and soak up the unique atmosphere. Indeed, great for romantic couples and families alike, there are a number of special events held throughout the months of November and December, which are great for capturing the yuletide spirit.

Taking on an almost magical appearance, sparkling lights and lanterns deck the streets, whilst the island comes alive with the sound of music and festive aromas. With street theatre and ghoulish walks to parades and traditional markets there is something to appeal to everyone.

For instance, to experience Jersey in all its night time glory, the Battle of the Flowers is a great event to attend. Colourfully decorated floats parade through the town of St Helier, while dancers and music provides visitors with plenty of entertainment.

The Santa Lucia Parade of Light is equally enchanting. Celebrated with a lantern procession, hundreds of children, alongside a host of musicians, take to the streets carrying lights. The evening culminates in a spectacular finale with some exciting street theatre.

The Christmas Markets are another experience not to miss. The Norman French market, located at Weighbridge Place, proves a great opportunity for trying the homemade crepes. The Spirit of Christmas Market, on the other hand, is a real highlight of the festive season. Held in Jersey’s Old Marche Publique in the Royal Square, it offers up a plethora of goodies from around the world, including Germany, Poland and Madeira. There is also a variety of street performers and musicians to add to the revelries.

The Christmas Pudding Race is a definite attraction for some fun-filled carousing; designed to raise money for charity, teams of people in fancy dress have to race around the streets balancing a Christmas pudding on a plate. The real challenge comes when they have to dodge a range of obstacles, such as jumping through hoops and limbo dancing under balloons!

Drawing crowds from around the island, the open air Christmas carol concert is also good for some festive entertainment. The event is open to the public and is perfect for singing along to the traditional Christmas songs.

Viewing the street theatre - which takes place in Weighbridge, King Street and the Royal Square - is another great way to fill your weekends. With musicians, dancers, stilt walkers and magicians, there is a host of performances designed to ignite the festive spark.

With such a variety of activities and events on offer, the island has proven to be a magical place to visit at Christmas. Indeed, the duration of flights to Jersey may not be as fun as the Christmas Pudding Race, but once you have arrived in Jersey, you will see that there is plenty of festive fun to be had by all.
