Insomnia: The Expert's Have Spoken - Don't Cut Corners On Sleeping

By: Sherry Harris

The experts have spoken, and suggest that getting eight hours of sleep each night will highly increase stamina. Also, good sleeping habits have shown to improve your health, especially in regards to beautiful skin and healthy organs. If you know that not getting a good night's sleep is detrimental to your body, why would you not want to make this a top priority?

But what exactly did the expert's have to say:

Is stress keeping you up at night? Here's a fact that might help you stop counting sheep in no time - you should actually sleep more when you're stressed. "Sleep is one of the absolute best ways to decrease stress hormones. In fact, it is the best way to get your cortisol down and your epinephrine down," Dr. Northrup says.

Satisfying sleep also is a very important component for a healthy life according to Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen, authors of "You: Staying Young, The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty."

So, the moral of the expert's advice is:

Start by making a commitment to yourself that sleep is of the utmost importance in your life. That is not to say you have to put your kids, pets and work aside. However, instead of seeing sleep as an interruption, shut out some of the interruptions to your sleep. Pull the shades, listen to some soft music, soak your feet in the tub, or whatever you see fit that helps you to relax at night. Take care of the responsibilities in your life as they present themselves to you, but don't think unnecessarily about them when the night falls.

If you are feeling some restlessness during the night, try some alternatives until you finally get to a point where you can fall asleep, and stay asleep. One such alternative is aromatherapy. Aromatherapy, as you would have guessed, is the therapeutic value of scents and their impact on the human psyche. Our sense of smell transcends the conscious level to reach the subconscious. In the case lavender, it is known to be a natural remedy for a range of ailments from anxiety and depression to insomnia and mood disturbances. Research has confirmed that lavender produces calming, soothing, and sedative effects.

I know it is hard to get out of that slump that you are in. But, sleeping is not a chore. It is a wonderful thing, in which you get to actually lay your back on something comfortable, while resting your head on something fluffy. When you think about it - how can you really resist?
