You know, getting a degree in photography seemed like such a brilliant idea back in college. I had absolutely no idea what courses I wanted to study until I read the college brochure list of available courses.I was fresh out of Highschool and didnt have a clue what I wanted to do with my life.Photography sounded like it was something that could be interesting and fun, more to the point, it didnt require alot of math. Math is and has been one of my weakest subjects, ever since algebra 1. I avoid it like the plague. So who knew I could actually come to enjoy my photography courses? Of course, photography has come a long way since my college days. Everything is geared more toward digital gadgets now. My manual Minolta Single Lens Reflex camera is practically an antique in todays fast moving market. The world of photography is changing.Fortunately, that also means more opportunites for more people, where before there were none. The internet is changing the face of the entire planet, creating tons of oppportunities for anyone who is willing. That is so exciting it practically makes my skin crawl. Of course I still love taking pictures of flowers, forests, kitties and my babies. I just get to see the results of my efforts much sooner. Instant gratifaction. For those of you new to the photographic scene, you dont realize how spoiled you are. Although I do miss certain aspects. Developing my own film and prints in a darkroom has its charm. The pungent smell of toner in the air, seeing your print developing right before your eyes, peace and solitude, oh what you miss.Fortunately todays growing market more than makes up for what we lack. Money cant buy me love, but what it can buy is a nice, new shiny digital SLR(Single Lens Reflex) with lots of extra features. So what if Ive traded in my darkroom for my computer, complete with desk and printer and high definition scanner? I still have my solitude, without the odor of toner lingering in the air. Every decade we lose a small piece of our souls, and gain twice as much technologically. Or do we?I am nostalgic, though I do try not to dwell too much on the past. Id like to make the most of this century, what few decades I have to live in it. So as I wave goodbye to my old manual Minolta on Ebay, I also help to usher in a new era. Say hello to technology and internet marketing, my fellow photographers.
