Is Your Drinking Water Filter System Really Protecting Your Family?

By: Ben Needles

You might think that any drinking water filter system would remove harmful contaminants that might be coming through your tap. But the truth is that most of them do an incomplete job.

One drinking water filter system that is highly advertised and promoted on television only removes some chlorine and odor. While removing chlorine is important, there are many other hazardous materials and their removal is just as important.

Take pesticides and herbicides, for example. They are used frequently and contaminate public reservoirs all over the country.

Lindane is a common pesticide. It causes cancer, disrupts glandular function and has adverse effects on the nerves, liver and kidneys. The popular Ever Pure drinking water filter system does not remove lindane and at a cost of $150, it really should. There are less expensive products on the market that do.

Alachlor and atrazine are two of the most widely used herbicides in the United States. The European Union, on the other hand, has banned them.

Atrazine causes birth defects and changes in hormonal levels.

Alachlor is known to irritate the skin and eyes and regular exposure to it over the course of your life can damage the liver, kidney, spleen, eyes and nose. It also causes cancer.

Both of these have been found coming through household taps and though the amount that may be present at the treatment facility is limited, the limits do not take into account the cumulative affect over a lifetime.

Neither the Pur drinking water filter system nor the Ever Pure unit removes alachlor.

Pur does remove atrazine and lindane and costs a lot less than Ever Pure. If those were the only ones that you had to choose from, the Pur drinking water filter system would be the best choice, but Pur has other problems.

THMs, VOCs, Benzene, TCE, or MTBE are all chemical contaminants present in public reservoirs and kitchen taps. Anywhere that chlorination is used for disinfection, THMs are also present. They have been linked to several different kinds of cancer in numerous studies. These toxic chemicals are listed by the EPA as carcinogens.

VOCs or volatile organic compounds compose a large group of chemicals with many different uses that have been known to contaminate groundwater. Many of them either cause cancer or are believed to. A Pur drinking water filter system will not remove VOCs or THMs.

Benzene is highly toxic and has even been found in Perrier, leading to the recall of the entire US supply several years back. It is present in many of the reservoirs around the country. TCE is an industrial solvent that is known to contaminate groundwater. MTBE is a gasoline additive that has seeped into the water supply. Pur does not remove any of these chemicals.

For less than $125, you can get a drinking water filter system that removes everything mentioned here and more. You owe it to yourself and your family to look for it. Its just the safest thing to do.
