London is a vibrant and bustling city at the best of times but during the festive period it has something extra special. There is a mind boggling array of things to do from ice skating and pantomimes to traditions from years gone by, some slightly odder than others! One things for sure, you’ll never be stuck for things to do in London over yuletide. London is well known for its markets that take place throughout the year and the Christmas offerings are no exception to the usual high standard of wares for sale. Borough Market is renowned as one of the best food markets in the city if not the whole of the country, so a trip here could have you well stocked up with winter goodies. The ever popular Greenwich Christmas Market runs throughout December and Hyde Park houses a giant German market which has stall upon stall of arts, crafts and gourmet gifts; the perfect place to wrap up warm and take a trip to for unique and quirky presents. Hyde Parks Winter Wonderland also offers a variety of other things to do and is home to London's largest outdoor ice rink, so get your skates on and take part in the fun! If ice skating is your forte you’ll be delighted by the temporary rinks that spring up all over London during Christmas. Most are open late into the evening so you can skate off dinner against some beautiful backdrops. Some even offer markets, discos and skating lessons so if you‘ve never skated before you can still take to the ice with confidence. Keeping with an outdoor theme, the Christmas lights are a great sight to behold as London quite literally lights up for the festivities. If you’re out and about you might want to investigate the huge Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. Sent as a gift from Norway every year as thanks for Britain’s help during the Second World War, the tree is usually over 20 metres high making it a great spectacle to behold. The trees lights are switched on in the first Thursday evening in December and the tree stands until the Twelfth Night of Christmas (6 January), so there’s plenty of time to see it. Some more alternative English traditions still carried on in London today include the Great Annual Smithfield Turkey Auction. This feather-filled event is held on Christmas Eve and is incredibly popular; therefore get there early if you plan to leave with Christmas dinner under your arm. For the more adventurous is The Peter Pan Cup, a 100-yard swim across the icy waters of the Serpentine which takes place on Christmas morning. Started in 1864 by JM Barrie this is definitely not for the faint hearted and certainly makes a change from watching carols on television. You’ll never be stumped for choices when it comes to finding hotels in London either; with so many festive events taking place you will never be far from the action.
