Justin Roper Boots: I Shoulda Been a Cowboy

By: Don VanPelt

Doesn’t everyone at some point in their life dream of being a cowboy? Seeing someone wearing Justin Roper Boots recently reminded me of my little rodeo fantasy. I mean, really, just being a horseman out on the great plains, learning how to rope and ride, herding cattle, eating baked beans out of a can over the open fire, sleeping in the great wide open…what could possibly be better than that? I know I’m not alone in this little dream. Too bad I’m really more of a city slicker in real life, and I tend to watch more Westerns than star in them.

At least I now have my own Justin Roper Boots to make me feel a little more rugged. And, I am pretty careful to treat them just how a real live cowboy would treat his boots. Did you know that cowboys never step into their left boot first (it’s considered to be bad luck)? And during winter, cowboys sprinkle red pepper into their boots to keep their feet warm (I’ll admit, I don’t know about this one, though, it’s pretty cold in these parts).

I have definitely learned a lot of cowboy folklore since being a little boy with my big cowboy dream. For example, a real cowboy would never set his hat on a bed (could lead to injury or death!). And, if a cowboy gives his boots to a friend, that friend will walk away. Now, I’m left wondering who would be foolish enough to give away their great Justin Roper Boots in the first place?

Even though I live a pretty mundane life, severely lacking in the six-gun-shooting, bronc-riding, cattle-driving ways of the real cowboys, I know I can put on my Justin Roper Boots and feel just a little closer to living out my cowboy dreams. These are the little things that keep me going when I have to just get through some long work days.

So, I will just keep moving forward in my life, wearing my Justin Roper Boots and entertaining my own little cowboy superstitions. Of course, I don’t often tell people about the little fantasies and superstitions, it doesn’t really go well with my business-guy-by-day life.

Here’s one last little bit of cowboy superstition—supposedly, if a father wears his boots during delivery, the baby will be a boy. I’m hoping to try this one out with my Justin Roper Boots; I’d really like someday to have a little buckaroo of my own, so that I can be there to share with him his own dreams of being a cowboy!
