Remembering The Day Our Nation Was On Fire

Here is a new twist to one of our biggest wars on water and how we are trying to keep its history alive in our minds. In Hawaii at Pearl Harbor, the officials are in the process of rebuilding the visitor's center for the USS Arizona Memorial. The old center is sinking and will be no longer safe to visit in a couple of years. The center was built on ground that was reclaimed after the water had receded, and now it is starting to be reclaimed as water is showing back up in the basement of this building.

The new building is set to be completed by December of 2010. As this Memorial is such a big reminder of our nation's history, it is visited every day by more than 4,000 visitors, although the building is only designed to accommodate only 2,000 a day. This building had been built in 1980 and with so many people going through its doors, it has had its resources strained.

The old center is where these visitors will get aboard ferries to take them out to the white memorial straddling the sunken hull of the Arizona. This ship sank nine minutes after it was hit by an aerial bomb, trapping more than 1,000 sailors and marines and sending them forever in a watery grave. This ship still can be viewed in the harbor, and the old and new center will house all of the exhibits and films pertaining to that day when we were pushed into war.

When the new center is completed, all of these items from the old building will be moved so that the story and the lives of the lost will be saved to be forever etched in our minds and the lives of your children. Many good sailors, marines, pilots and just every day people lost their lives that terrible day just as the sun was coming up. Also lost were the many doctors, nurses, and even people just trying to help any way they could, by helping no other way but to help someone who might have been so hurt as not to be able to get to the place to get help.

This disaster is still in the minds of the few living and frail survivors that live at Pearl Harbor, and they want to make sure that this day of history lives on forever
