Replacing Printer Ink Cartridges: Alternatives That Can Save You Money

By: Art Gib

When you go into a computer store and you walk down the isles that have printers to go with your computer, you realize that there are many printers in this world and a lot of ink cartridges to go with them.

Ink cartridges are little square boxes full of ink that go inside your printer that put colors on paper. There are four main colors in ink jet cartridges: magenta (red), yellow, cyan (light blue), and black. These four colors, by mixing together (actually, by printing tiny dots of different color very close to each other, thus creating the illusion of mixing colors) produce millions of different colors.

When you run out of ink in your printer you have a few options to get more ink. One option, which is the easiest, is to go to the store and look for your ink cartridge. But that can also be overwhelming too because there are so many different ink cartridges and it might take forever to find the right one for your printer.

But one good thing is that you may be able to find a generic ink cartridge which can be much cheaper than the name brand, but works just the same as the name brand ink cartridges.

Another option is that you can go to the store and buy the ink refill kit. This process can be very time consuming and very messy, but can save you a lot of money in the long run. The kit comes with all of the colors to refill your cartridge, syringes to inject the ink into each cartridge, and instructions on how to do it. After the first few times you will probably be able to refill your ink cartridges in no time.

Another way to replace ink in your empty ink cartridge is to get them refilled by a professional. There are some stores that will refill your ink cartridges for a fraction of the price of a new cartridge.

But refilling cartridges isn't without its problems. Putting new ink in your old cartridges doesn't work with every model. This is because some of the new ink cartridges have little micro chips in them that tell the computer when it is out of ink. At that point, the computer won't use that cartridge anymore, even if you refill it.

But all is not lost. Off brand manufacturers are able to build compatible ink cartridges with a new chip that will tell your computer that you have a new cartridge that is full and ready to print on demand.

Whichever path you choose, by avoiding the brand-name replacements you stand to save plenty of money when it comes to keeping your printer running.
