Rome and its Romantic Wonders

Rome and romance just seem to be inextricably linked – even when hearing tales of the medieval battles that took place there hundreds of years ago, one cannot help but wistfully imagine sun-drenched battlefields filled with strong looking men clad in shining golden armour, no doubt galloping on glossy brown steeds. It’s an ancient city that does nothing by halves and all this rich history lends the modern-day Rome an air of timeless splendour.

Indeed, the famous poet Thomas Hardy described Rome as 'Time's central city' in one of the many poems he was inspired to write about the place. And walking around this scenic Italian haven you really begin to appreciate what he meant by that; if there is one city that just seems to capture the moment and make time stop, then it is Rome.

Trail along in the footsteps of ancient warriors, emperors and saints and discover the many churches, statues and historical monuments that make Rome such a sparkling gem in Italy’s crown. One of the key symbols in Roman history is the Colosseum, a huge amphitheatre used for gladiatorial combat and capable of seating up to 60,000 cheering spectators. It cuts quite a picture when seen against a blazing blue Italian sky and its historical presence is definite.

Similarly, Vatican City stands loud and proud in Rome’s history and continues to have a deep symbolic presence – with many people travelling to Rome just to bathe in the glory of this ancient quarter.

However, another eye into Rome is the many little piazzas and cobbled streets that are dotted around the city, providing a window into the 'everyday' Rome. For example, take a wander down Via Giulia – a church-lined street with a huge archway straddling its centre and swathes of trailing ivy – and here you will find tiny churches, antique shops and a little bit of shaded respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Indeed, the street celebrated its 500th year in June and by Roman standards this makes it a bit of a baby, but when walking along its wobbly cobbles, one cannot help but wonder what historical events it may live to see in the future.

It is also good to know that there are many flights to Rome available all year round. Indeed, perhaps when you are there you will be able to splash out on some extravagant accommodation in an ancient castle, or some such lavishness.

However, wherever you stay and whatever you spend your time doing it is unlikely that Rome will disappoint on any level. Instead it is extremely likely that its romantic charm will take you over and you will fall in love with its grand historical structures and quiet cobbled streets alike.
