Silverfish Control - Prevention and Extermination

By: Bob32 Haskins32

Tips and Techniques for Household Silverfish Control

Summary: Silverfish control in the home is probably easier than you think – that is, if you understand how to remove the conditions in which they thrive.

One of the most commonly found household pests are silverfish; small wingless insects about 0.5 inches long. They are silvery grey in color and appear to glisten when they get older.

They are mostly found in moist environments in your home, such as under sinks and in your laundry room. They feed on small particles of food and also live on the paste applied on the back of wallpaper. These small creatures do not cause any harm to us but are considered quite a nuisance.

These long, scaly, fish-like insects have a pair of long antennae at their front and at their back and three appendages resembling a tail. The presence of silverfish indicates damp conditions in your house.

Silverfish are mostly nocturnal, and get disturbed very easily when exposed to light. They scurry along rapidly when disturbed. The female silverfish may lay more than hundred eggs during their lifetime (so it’s easy to understand why silverfish control can be a problem.)

Silverfish do not spread diseases or carry germs; therefore their occurrence does not result in danger to your health, but their presence may cause irritation and nuisance to you.

To maintain silverfish control, follow these simple directions:

? Remove old boxes, stacks of magazines, books, papers and fabrics from your home.

? Lower the humidity with the help of fans and dehumidifiers in your home and reduce the presence of water may help get rid of this creature.

? Make sure that areas such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens have proper ventilation.

? Repair leaking plumb if any leakage occurs.

? Try to keep your house dry, clean and free from moisture as much as possible.

Silverfish control can be achieved by the use of residual insecticides that can be easily bought from hardware stores. If you have an infestation in your home, treatments need to be done to all probable hiding places like crevices, cracks, inner floor moldings, around hot and heating water pipes, behind and inside furniture, in cupboards including attics.

In case you are finding difficulty in maintaining silverfish control, or do not wish to carry out the control yourself, you can approach a self-regulating company for pest control.

The details of such pest control companies can be found from local newspapers and from telephone directories. And if you like to treat silverfish on your own, then carefully read the label placed on the container of insecticide prior to its purchase and ensure that the pesticide is particularly prescribed for silverfish. The correct way for using this hazardous pesticide is by following the instructions carefully so that you or your valuable belongings possess no damage or harm.
